Sandusky Headwaters Preserve (SHP) is the newest park addition to the Crawford Park District opening on October 21st, 2021. This park was formed from funds through the H2Ohio project in collaboration with the Ohio Division of Natural Resources. The H2Ohio project is a comprehensive water quality initiative working to address severe water quality issues throughout Ohio caused by a variety of issues ranging from nitrogen and phosphorus runoff from fertilizer, failing drinking water systems, and failing sewage systems from outdated infrastructure.
SHP encompasses 38 acres of scenic riparian bottomland and wetland adjacent to the headwaters of the Sandusky River, two man made wetland ponds, four man made vernal pools, a recreated wetland/marsh prairie, and deciduous upland old growth forests with ancient trees over 200 years old. Home to bountiful wildlife, Sandusky Headwaters Preserve offers countless opportunities to nature watch as this park is open for passive recreation only. |
