Nature Playscape open for kids to explore!
The Crawford Park District is pleased to announce the recent construction of A Sandstone Rockscape at Lowe-Volk to be incorporated in newly designated nature-based play area for children. The rockscape was designed and built by a group of volunteers commonly called, The Cabin Guys. Their name was assigned because they built the Dapper Cabin at Colonel Crawford Schools. The historic sandstone was donated by Chuck Kimerline of Bucyrus Road Materials and Nancy Everly of The Leesville Trading Post. Since sandstone was previously quarried at Lowe-Volk Park, it was the perfect building material for the rockscape!
The newly constructed nature-based play area was designed with children in mind to connect with and explore nature. The goal of this nature-based play area is to provide children with a designated space within the park system that accommodates the physical needs of children in terms of physical activity. This space provides an area for children to explore hands on and play without causing any harm to the surrounding environment and flora and fauna. This space currently includes a rockscape, full of steps, inclines, and declines to challenge coordination and balance; a mud sink to inspire creativity; and an abacus for problem solving.
